Cognitive Behavioural Therapy

CBT is a talking therapy that can be used to help with a range of disorders including depression and a range of anxieties. It is an evidence-based therapy recommended by NICE guidelines that looks at changing how we feel, think and behave. It is understood that these are inter-linked, and that these negative thoughts and feelings often leave you feeling as though you are caught in a vicious cycle.

In addition to Anxiety and Depression, CBT can also help those who experience:

  • panic disorder

  • phobias

  • post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) & psychological trauma

  • self esteem

  • sleep problems

  • alcohol and substance misuse

  • pain such as chronic fatigue syndrome and fibromyalgia

  • long term health conditions - IBS, Long covid, cancer, chronic heart disease, COPD and diabetes

Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing Therapy

Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing Therapy (EMDR) is most effective in the treatment of PTSD, anxiety, and phobias, . It can also be helpful with some forms of pain.

The purpose of EMDR is to relieve stress and other negative feelings that can be caused by traumatic memories.  EMDR therapy shows that the

mind can heal from psychological trauma, much as how the body recovers from physical trauma.

        Polyvagal Theory

Polyvagal theory (PVT) is a therapeutic approach that helps individuals to understand better and manage their body's response to stress and trauma. It focuses on the vagus nerve and the role it plays in regulating emotions and behaviours.

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy

Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) is a type of talking therapy. The main goal of ACT is to help you improve your ‘psychological flexibility’. A therapist helps you learn skills to manage thoughts, feelings, and sensations that you avoid and are fearful of.

Research has found that the ACT model of therapy can be helpful for a range of health conditions and problems. These include chronic primary pain, sleep, and mental health conditions such as depression, anxiety, and OCD.

Schemas are self-defeating, themes or patterns that we keep repeating throughout our lives. Some examples of common schemas and their effects are: Failure – a sense that you are incompetent compared to others.
